Today was wonderful and so full! Full of beauty and history and delight. This was a first for me and one that I was very much looking forward to. I have tried to make known, the significance of today to the students and I hope they will remember it well. We visited Imbabazi. The property was begun in the 1950s by Rosamund Carr. Her book "land of a thousand hills" is one everyone should read; it will make you love Rwanda so much! She started it as a pyrethrum plant but in 1994 after the genocide, created an orphanage instead. She lived here until she died in 2006. All of the kids who went to the orphanage after the genocide are now aging out. They are around the same age as our students and we had a wonderful time. We toured the property which could take a day by itself. It is beautiful! Volcanoes, flowers, trees, gardens, old English style cottages! We played lots of soccer! We played guitar and drums and sang and danced. We went on a hiked to the top of a volcano and saw the farming going on in the crater. Then we watched the traditional dancers dance in Roz Carr's garden just like they did for her every Sunday. All of this with our wonderful new friends, the kids of Imbabazi. I loved today! I will have the kids write and will post their thoughts as soon as possible!
